From Rootless to Regenerative

My Story

I’ve been living off-grid and homeless for over a decade. I’ve taught permaculture, launched radical sustainability projects, and kept moving to survive. Now, I’m about to lose everything I own. I need your help to get home, recover my work, and start building again.

Help me recover my life’s work and rebuild a mobile off-grid homebase (Basecamp) for survival and solidarity.

15 years ago I committed my life to only study, learn, practice, apply, share, and teach permaculture as an experiment to see what would happen to a half white black man who used the remainder of his white privilege and life to only do things that would improve the world in the best way possible for everyone, while keeping my footprint on earth as small as humanly possible as well as proving or disproving (both to myself and others) in a socially and scientifically valid manner, whether permaculture was a practical and realistic solution that works and whether or not it is an appropriate and realistic solution for Black and Indigenous People of Color to the problems we face on Earth, as a result of Racism, Capitalism, Colonialism and Climate Change, etc. I became homeless in 2018 when I was evicted and a refugee in 2022 when I had no place to live, no money, no one to work with, no work, and no place to go, and could no longer survive within the country which I was born in without cooperating with the planetary destroying system of capitalism, and that is something I will never be willing to do. I had to leave america to survive. I became a digital nomad and have been on a world tour to promote permaculture and sustainability around the world, teaching permaculture whenever and wherever I can to whomever is interested since may 2022 (3 years ago). This project is called the Permaculture World Tour with Matthew Stephens The ultimate goal of the Permaculture World Tour with Matthew Stephens is to "Return the Surplus" of knowledge and information I have aquired from studying, teaching, and practicing permaculture in north america for 15 years to the people who need it most, namely single mothers, widows, and homeless women in Africa and other parts of the world where Women are in Poverty, oppressed by patriarchy, capitalism, mysogyny, domestic violence, sexual assualt, toxic masculinity, Intinsive Farming & Industrial agriculture and where the climate makes it is difficult to grow food as a result of deforestation, desertification and climate change.

Matthew Stephens Community Forest Garden in Chicago, Illinois is a zero budget rainfed homeless refugee permaculture forest garden, formerly known as Cheryl Ann Williamsons Forest Garden at Kenwood Park in Hyde Park Chicago. In 2018 the Chicago Park District co conspired with the Periera Family of the Plant to Evict us and steal our garden. While they where successful, we just move the entire garden (except the oak, the apple, and the catalpa tree to Windsor Park in South Shore. They got the land, we kept the garden. designed and installed by Matthew Stephens for Sacred Ecology Design. Relocated by Matthew Stephens and Daniel Santos(aka hippie handyman)

Who Is Matthew Stephens?

BIOGRAPHY(2015) Matthew Anthony Stephens was born in Beverly on Chicago’s South Side. While the Windy City has not typically been the first place one would think of with regards to permaculture and urban sustainability, up until now, anyway, Matthew is doing his part to change that. As founder of the Earth Reforestation Project, Permaculture America, and Permaculture Chicago, Matthew has done forums for students at his alma mater, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, and conducted after school mentoring programs about sustainability, design, and permaculture. Here he has been able to effectively put into practice his seven years of teambuilding, along with his study of urban food deserts and the nutritional dilemmas in urban environments that ensue from such designations. Gaining understanding and knowledge as a student under the tutelage of world-renown Permaculture Institute founders Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton, Matthew received his Permaculture Design Certification in Melbourne, Australia in 2009. Having studied Mollison’s work and permaculture design systems extensively since 2007, learning from the masters was a crowning achievement. Now, Matthew brings that abundance and wealth of international experience to local settings. He counts as part of that hands-on global know-how: Terrace Design and Farming study in both Vietnam and the Philippines; Rice Farming in Thailand; Terrace Garden Building for Moon River Lodge in Malaysia; and Garden Path Construction at Bill Mollison’s Tagari Farms in Tasmania. As a teacher of Introduction to Permaculture courses in Chicago since 2012, Matthew takes pride and satisfaction in having taken what he learned firsthand to create a global permaculture network and footprint on Facebook to facilitate cross communication between permaculture designers, with one group for every country on earth—one group dedicated to each continent—and focus groups for sharing information with respect to different fields of study within permaculture and sustainable agriculture systems. Since 2011, he has also worked with Chicago’s oldest community garden, Xochiquetzal (1986), as both a mentor and permaculture design consultant and educator. Today, in addition to his work as a local community organizer in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park neighborhood on the city’s South Side, Matthew works with the Unitarian Universalist Church on garden maintenance and design consultation where he counts to his credit putting in a low-maintenance shade garden with swales. This fits right in with his study of passive solar architecture—a passion since 1987—and his practice of indoor gardening since 2011. He’s the proud archivist of the work of Lee Porter Butler, creator of the double envelope passive solar house design, and America’s pioneering passive solar architect of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s last century. Placing exclusivity on the importance of neighborhood living, Matthew travels only by foot or bicycle and does not take public transit out of protest for safety and environmental conditions, concerns, and service quality. He has boycotted AT&T and Comcast since 2011 and Big Oil since 2010. Matthew Stephens is the founders and the designer of Hales Franciscan Food Forest, Chicago’s First Urban Food Forest in 2014.
